Feeling Out Online Casino Prohibition 25 Oct 2006 the outlawing of alcohol which really did a number on regular bars but helped beef up the Mafia? Surely, online casino proponents would like to portray it as such. Is that fair to the U.S. government? "Fair" is not a word, though, that many might use to describe the way online casino companies operated previously in the United States. While no specific anti-online gambling statute was on the books, authorities generally interpreted the 1961 Wire Act to apply to a ban on online casino gambling. The federal government had seemed content to leave online casinos alone. Some states took online casino companies trying to do business within their borders to court under the Wire Act. And while the proportion of online gamblers compared to regular gamblers was always smaller, the online casino industry was able to - like many other minorities - make its voice heard to a degree that many might have thought made it a majority. The future is hardly bleak for online casino gambling, but the industry might have to do something major to prove to Washington it deserves legitimacy.
